ChatGPT chat and work merger: what it means for your firm

ChatGPT chat and work merger brings discussion and task tools into one experience

In short

  • Chat and Work will come together.
  • Codex will keep its separate place.
  • Some users may face more frequent waits.

The ChatGPT chat and work merger will bring conversation and practical tasks into one place. As reported by ZDNET and TechCrunch, OpenAI plans to combine the tabs, with selected users trying the experience before wider access.

For a small UK business, we think the useful question is whether this makes a real job easier to finish. A tidier screen is welcome. It still needs to produce work you can trust.

What OpenAI is changing

Chat and Work capabilities coming together within ChatGPT
OpenAI plans to bring discussion and task execution into the same experience.

The desktop app currently separates ChatGPT from Codex. Within ChatGPT, Chat and Work have their own tabs. OpenAI plans to bring Work’s task capabilities into the main ChatGPT experience. Codex will stay separate.

OpenAI describes an experience where users can supply files and plugins, then request websites, presentations or actions on the web. Users can review the work and steer it as it progresses.

From December, Plus, Pro and Business plans will share a usage allowance between ChatGPT and Codex. That allowance will be measured in tokens, the information the model reads and produces. More demanding models and tasks generally consume more. Instant chat will be excluded from that allowance.

Try a useful job before changing your routine

A suggested trial moves from choosing a task to reviewing its output
Judge the whole job, including the time spent checking it.

OpenAI expects most customers to see little difference in how often they wait for their allowance to reset. Some users could face more frequent waits, depending on their model and workload. We would avoid making a deadline depend on having allowance available.

Our suggestion is to choose a small, repeatable task with a clear finish. That might mean turning your own service notes into a draft presentation. Decide what a usable result looks like before you start, then check the output against those notes.

If you are considering AI websites or AI software, we think the same test applies: can you review the result, correct it and use it? Count the checking time as part of the job when judging whether the tool helps.

Our take

We welcome the simpler layout. We think the bigger opportunity is keeping the brief beside the work while it develops. For a business owner, being able to spot a wrong assumption and correct it early would matter more than having another feature to learn.

But we would resist handing over a whole business process just because the tabs have merged. Our preference is to give ChatGPT a bounded job and keep a person responsible for accepting the result. For a website, that means checking what customers are promised and whether enquiries reach the right place. We would expand its role only when the finished work earns that trust. A smoother interface is a useful start; it is not evidence that the work needs less supervision.
